The Movement: 2:14-41

Sermon Notes from Pastor Jon

Acts 2:14-41

Acts is about Jesus establishing His Kingdom through the Spirit-empowered movement of the gospel to the ends of the earth

1.     THE SPIRIT EMPOWERS THE CHURCH TO PREACH THE GOSPEL (14-36)

*Call on the Lord now to be saved from the wrath to come

*Call means to repent

  • conviction of sin
  • Admit you deserve wrath
  • Cry out for mercy
  • No one is automatically in

*2 Old Testament passages are used to prove that Jesus is the Messiah & the Lord:

  • Psalm 16
  • Psalm 110

APPLICATION: LEARN HOW TO SHARE THE GOSPEL

(1)   Tell the story of Jesus’ life (miracles, death & resurrection)

(2)   Have someone read the gospels

2.     THOSE WHO RECEIVE THE GOSPEL ARE SAVED (37-41)

*They are cut to the heart: what must we do?

  • Have you ever felt conviction?
  • Have you ever thought about the fact that your sins killed Jesus?

*The right response to our sins is to repent

  • Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of attitude/action
  • Water baptism was offered by John as a public sign of repentance
  • Peter is NOT saying that baptism brings forgiveness of sins
  • New Testament is clear that no act of obedience can save you
  • Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
  • You receive all of the Holy Spirit at the moment of conversion
