The Movement: Acts 1:12-26

Sermon Notes from Pastor Jon

Acts 1:12-26

Acts is about Jesus advancing His Kingdom through the Spirit-empowered movement of the gospel to the ends of the earth!

*For that Movement to happen:

1.     WE NEED TO BE DEVOTED TO PRAYER

*Prayer is key to redemption in Acts:

-8:14-17 Revival breaks out in Samaria

-9:11-12 Paul’s baptism & commission

-10:4, 9, 30 Gospel goes to the Gentiles

-13:2-3 When they SEND Paul & Barnabas on the 1st missionary journey

2.     WE NEED TO BE DEVOTED TO THE WORD

*Here are some things we learn about the word:

  • It is inspired by the Holy Spirit
  • It has a dual AUTHORSHIP
  • It can tell the future before it happens

*Psalm 41:9 Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me

  • It is all about Jesus

3.     WE NEED TO BE DEVOTED TO WITNESS

Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.

*WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT? WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

*The New Israel is built on the foundation of the Apostles & their Witness

-Matthew 16:16-19 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”… And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

-Ephesians 2:19-22 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

-Revelation 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

What does this mean for us?

  • These are our promises

We receive from them and pass it on to others
